Australian Open: English journalist Mike Dickson dies in the middle of the tournament

Sad news for the world of tennis and journalism. Mike Dickson, special correspondent for the Daily Mail in Melbourne, where the Australian Open is currently taking place, has died at the age of 59. A true icon of the profession across the Channel, Dickson worked for the Daily Mail for 33 years, covered 30 different sports and traveled to more than 50 countries.

“We are devastated to announce that our wonderful husband and father, Mike, collapsed and passed away while in Melbourne for the Australian Open. For 38 years, he lived his dream covering sports around the world. He was a truly wonderful man and will be missed terribly. Lucy, Sam, Ruby and Joe,” his family wrote on Mike Dickson’s X account (ex-Twitter).

Nicknamed “Mr Wimbledon” by his peers, Dickson was due to celebrate his 60th birthday on January 27. He lived in Wimbledon in London. “Mr. Dickson was an extremely respected and admired journalist, wrote the Daily Mail. His passing will deeply affect his colleagues.”

Lee Clayton, sports editor at the Daily Mail, explains that “Dicko was everything you want in a correspondent: a brilliant news hunter, a wonderful writer and a friend to so many in his sport. The tennis world will join us in mourning. He was a giant of journalism.”
