Athletics: With over half a million runners, the London Marathon sets a new record

More than half a million people have applied to take part in the 2024 edition of the London Marathon, organizers announced on Thursday.

A total of 578,374 applications were received to run the April 21 marathon in London, a figure that eclipses the previous mark of 457,861 set before the 2019 pandemic by candidates for the 2020 edition.

Event Director Hugh Brasher said the distinct camaraderie between attendees continues to generate an exceptional desire to participate. "It's an event that inspires people to get into running and raise millions for charity," he said.

The highest number of applications came from the United Kingdom, with 457,105 applicants, including 52.9% men, 46.4% women and 0.6% non-binary people. The international ballot received 121,269 additional applications.
