Decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer achieved a nice 5.15m pole vault on Sunday during the French indoor athletics championships but now wants to rest before his decathlon in the United States in five weeks, where he will go for the Olympic minimums.
Engaged in the heptathlon during these championships in Miramas (Bouches-du-Rhône), the double world champion only took part in three of the seven events.
More smiling than the day before, after an aborted 60 meters and a “catastrophic” weight competition according to him, Kevin Mayer had fun in the pole vault on Sunday by clearing 5.15 m despite a reduced momentum. He then decided to stop his competition after a failed jump at 5.25 m.
“Yesterday was tough but today I had a blast! It was cool,” he reacted in the mixed zone. “I'm always tired but we can still have fun on the pole. I managed a nice jump of 5.15 m, I’m happy.”
On Saturday, he explained that he had suffered a small sprain in his ankle on Wednesday and that he had felt a “strain in his ischio”. He therefore did not want to take any risks five weeks before his decathlon in San Diego, California.
“I really need some rest here,” he repeated on Sunday. “I've done most of the work so now until San Diego it's really going to be rest and micro-adjustments and that's it.”
Twice Olympic silver medalist, Kevin Mayer has not completed a decathlon since his world title in 2022 and has therefore not yet achieved the minimums for the Paris Olympic Games.
