Athletics: alert for Kevin Mayer who does not finish his 60 m at the French Indoor Championships

Decathlon world record holder Kevin Mayer, who had not hung a bib since August 2023, did not finish his 60 meters on Saturday during the French indoor championships in Miramas, stopping his effort mid-race due to of a “strain in the ischio”.

Double world champion and two-time Olympic silver medalist, Kevin Mayer took part in his first competition in Bouches-du-Rhône on Saturday since the World Championships in Budapest, where he retired due to a painful Achilles tendon. Engaged in the heptathlon, he was to take part in four of the seven events this weekend.

But during the first of them, the 60 meters, he stopped his effort after about forty meters and said he felt a “strain in his ischio”.

“I'm working a lot at the moment and I stupidly suffered a little sprain on Wednesday walking in a hole,” he then explained. “I come here in training and I told myself that even if I only did 40 meters, it would be 40 meters in the legs.”

“It’s just a soreness but as it’s the ischio which has already broken three times in my career, when I have a soreness, it’s difficult to go all out,” he added . “But I made four starts before the race, one start there... It’s a very good session.”

He should participate later in the morning in the weight competition and on Sunday in the pole vault, but should not start the 60 meter hurdles as initially planned.

Kevin Mayer, 32, has not completed a decathlon since his world title in July 2022 and has therefore not yet achieved the minimums for the Olympic Games. He was due to do a decathlon in Australia in December but preferred to postpone the deadline until the end of March in San Diego in the United States.
