Athlé: two years suspension for Mo Katir after failing three doping controls

Mohamed Katir, world runner-up in the 5000m, was suspended for two years by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) on Friday for three breaches of whereabouts regulations for doping controls.

“Mohamed Katir admitted an anti-doping rule violation and was banned by the Athletics Integrity Unit for two years, following three failures to provide whereabouts information during “a period of 12 months,” the independent agency which carries out anti-doping controls on behalf of World Athletics said in a statement.

Provisionally suspended on February 7, the long-distance runner initially denied having not been located three times in the last 12 months. The Spanish Athletics Federation (RFEA) “immediately suspended the athlete's license” after being officially informed of the opening of proceedings against him.

Katir's suspension will last from February 7, 2024 to February 6, 2026 and all results and awards earned since October 10, 2023 will be voided. The 25-year-old runner, world vice-champion in the 5000 meters in 2023, will therefore not be able to participate in the Paris Olympic Games this summer, even though he was one of Spain's main medal chances in athletics.
