Arkéa Ultim Challenge: Anthony Marchand will finally stop to repair his trimaran

After Armel Le Cléac'h in Brazil during the descent of the Atlantic, Tom Laperche, still in South Africa to repair a water leak on the central hull, it is the turn of Anthony Marchand to make the choice a technical stopover to repair his giant trimaran.

The sailor hit an OFNI on Tuesday which seriously damaged the port foil. While he had initially chosen to continue his journey by switching to the Indian Ocean, Marchand changed his mind. His team announced that the 32-meter UItim would finally reach the port of Cape Town, where Tom Laperche is currently, to carry out repairs. He will reach his destination on Friday.

The situation seemed stabilized after repairs carried out in the morning, guided by Team Actual, but it deteriorated too much last night to begin crossing the Indian and Pacific Oceans, explained Yves Le Blevec, director of the team: “There are too many uncertainties to afford to cross the two most hostile oceans on the planet. The damaged foil has deteriorated in its housing and is taking up play in the float. The 420 kg piece is impossible to immobilize, repeated impacts represent a real risk for the structural integrity of the float, and therefore of the entire boat.

It is therefore necessary to remove the foil but this operation is impossible alone at sea for the navigator. Team Actual is organizing itself to meet Anthony Marchand in Cape Town and carry out all the necessary repairs within the allotted time of 24 hours, the minimum stopover period imposed by the race regulations.
