Reform of the Constitution: a large majority of French people to review the rules of the referendum

At 65, the Constitution deserved a facelift. This is in any case the opinion of Emmanuel Macron who rolled out his constitutional revision project this Wednesday from the Constitutional Council. Asked about the details of the measures, on average 75% of French people were positive according to an Odoxo-Backbone survey for Le Figaro. If the most popular proposal turns out to be the entry of voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion) into the Constitution (87%), the autonomy of Corsica only receives 54% of favors. The population also shows a lot of enthusiasm for the broadening of the scope of the referendum (84%), for the relaxation of the shared initiative referendum (76%) and for the new act of decentralization announced (79%).

The head of state intended to mark the occasion with his announcements but very few French people showed him any interest. Only 29% of French people were exposed to his speech. This is the worst score observed since Emmanuel Macron was at the head of the country. Note that his speech took place at a time of low viewing, and that it was not broadcast on traditional television channels, such as TF1 or France 2. Among this small audience, 63% of listeners did not been convinced by the tenant of the Élysée. With 80% of good opinion, supporters of the presidential camp go against the overall trend, followed distantly by supporters of the left (43%). For their part, the French right-wing are the most severe with Emmanuel Macron, with only 17% enthusiastic.

If the presidential figure does not convince, the project pleases more. While 24% of French people are frankly in favor of the presidential initiative, 42% believe that the idea is good but that it comes at an inopportune time. In short, the constitutional reform garners 66% approval. However, a minority opposes it head-on (32%).

Assent also remains in the majority regardless of the political proximity of citizens. It varies between 91% for supporters of the presidential party to 54% for those close to La France insoumise and the National Rally. The figures rise to 71% for supporters of the Socialist Party, 77% among environmentalists and up to 80% for Les Républicains.
