The MG ZS makes history: the first Chinese car to lead sales in Spain

The MG ZS had been warning for several months and it has already happened. For the first time, a Chinese car has become the best-selling car of the month in Spain. The MG ZS, a model that has been on sale in our country for barely two years (a year and a half for the gasoline version), was the best-selling car in August with 1,949 registered units, more than triple (206.4% more ) than a year ago, according to data from the consultancy Ideaauto and the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac).

Sales of the Chinese urban SUV have skyrocketed 316% (more than four times) since the beginning of the year and it is already the best-selling Chinese-made model in Spain. It represents more than 60% of MG sales, owned by the Chinese conglomerate SAIC Motor and heir to the former British MG. As a brand, it exceeds 17,000 units sold in our country, five times more than a year ago, and has overtaken historical brands such as Fiat, Nissan, Mazda, Volvo, Mini, Jeep, Suzuki, Alfa Romeo and Honda, among others.

The MG ZS is available with two gasoline engines of 106 and 111 HP, and two electric variants of 156 and 177 HP with up to 440 kilometers of autonomy. The gasoline versions are the most demanded by Spanish drivers and represent almost 97% of the model's total sales.

In addition, it is one of the best-selling cars to private customers (75% of the model's total sales) after the Dacia Sandero, the Toyota Corolla and the Kia Sportage.

Its price is unbeatable: from 17,200 euros for the access version with a 106 hp 1.5 VTI-tech engine with a five-speed manual transmission. The 1.0 T-GDI version with 111 hp and a six-speed automatic transmission is available from 20,990 euros.

The MG ZS has been imposed in August on the great best seller in the Spanish market, the Dacia Sandero, which has been second with 1,802 units sold, 15.7% more than last year. The Toyota Corolla has completed the podium with 1,361 cars delivered, 86.2% more than a year ago. The Kia Sportage was fourth with 1,160 registrations (-3.3%) and the Toyota C-HR was fifth with 1,148 vehicles dispatched (110%).

In the accumulated of the year, the Dacia Sandero has increased its advantage by almost 800 units over the Seat Arona, confirming it as the favorite to be the great winner of 2023. The Romanian utility leads the provisional classification with 18,283 units registered up to August, 38% more than in the same period of the previous year. The Seat Arona is second with 16,825 cars delivered (26%) and the Peugeot 2008 completes the podium with 13,550 registrations.

By brands, Toyota led the sales market in August with 5,352 units and was the only one in the 'top 5' that grew in volume compared to the previous year (a solid 8.4%). Kia was second with 3,960 deliveries (-13%) and Hyundai was third with 3,690 (-16.6%). In the accumulated of the year, Toyota is a little more leader with 54,022 cars sold (11.2%), while Kia is second with 45,292 units (10.4%) and Volkswagen completes the podium with 44,546 (9.6%). .
