The Last Of Us Online: Sony cancels the release of the multiplayer game

This video game project was intriguing due to its unusual proposition: a multiplayer experience in the environment of the saga without forgetting the narrative. For months, fans of The Last Of Us have been waiting for details of its release, which was ultimately canceled.

Naughty Dog, the studio behind it, a subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment (manufacturer of the Playstation range), announced the total abandonment of the project. The decision by the studio, also behind the hit game Uncharted, comes after many of its developers were assigned to other projects.

The second part of The Last of Us was a success, with more than 10 million sales and renewed interest thanks to the series broadcast on HBO and Prime Video. On Amazon, it was the second best-selling game of 2020.

The franchise's multiplayer project, designed as a “service game”, therefore aimed to unite players. Like Fortnite, which has more than 220 million monthly active players, World of Warcraft or Grand Theft Auto V, the game-as-a-service model consists of regularly adding additional paid content to a game (often free initially) , to constantly renew players' interest and monetize games after purchase or download. New equipment, another appearance for his avatar... everything is done so that the player can get his hands on his wallet. A goose that lays golden eggs for publishers, but a model that is not part of the original DNA of the Naughty Dog studio, developer of the Sony project.

The viability of the project was quickly questioned, as Sony focuses more and more on service games. Despite the popularity of the franchise, the project sucked up too many staff and financial resources, the studio justifies. The media Bloomberg notes that the teams mobilized for its development had been significantly reduced since last May. A death almost foretold.

The studio's DNA revolves around single-player narrative experiences such as Crash Bandicoot. Offering a multiplayer experience with The Last of Us Online was therefore a daring bet for its own identity, and would have had a profound impact on the development of the developer. “To launch and support The Last of Us Online, we would have been required to allocate all of the studio's resources to post-launch content for several years, which would have impacted the development of our other games . » Naughty Dog is therefore faced with two paths, “becoming the studio of a single service game or continuing to focus on narrative single-player games which have forged our heritage”. The choice is now made.

Freed from its expensive project, the studio intends to focus on “a brand new single-player experience” and on the third part of The Last Of Us, the release date of which has still not been announced.
