Thales will equip the new Polish frigates

New major contract for Thales in the military naval sector. The French defense group announced this morning the signing of an order, worth 400 million euros, with Poland for its navy. Thales will supply the combat system, as well as the sonars and sensors - the eyes and ears - of the three new Polish frigates, ordered in March 2022 from the British manufacturer Babcock. The boats built for Poland share a common design with the British T31 frigates, also equipped by Thales.

In detail, the English and Dutch subsidiaries of Thales will provide the combat management system called TACTICOS, sonar suites (the BlueHunter hull system and towed Captas-2), air surveillance and fire control radars, as well as 360° infrared sensors to the Polish Navy's Miecznik-class frigates. The first vessel is due to enter active service in 2029. These frigates are multi-mission boats, particularly for securing maritime communication routes and critical infrastructure. “They will significantly increase the capabilities of the Polish Navy and will constitute an important contribution of Poland within the Atlantic Alliance (NATO),” underlines Thales.

This contract results from the strategic cooperation agreement, signed in 2022 by Thales with the Polish consortium PGZ-Miecznik. And more broadly the strategic partnership established between Poland and the United Kingdom, two countries particularly committed to supporting Kiev in the face of Moscow's aggression. (Warsaw and kyiv are working to end the “grain crisis” which prompted Poland to suspend its arms deliveries to Ukraine at the end of September.)

For Thales, “this is a considerable success, achieved with the support of the British government. We will continue our historic relationship with Poland into the future, which will fully benefit both our nations,” said Alex Cresswell, CEO of Thales in the United Kingdom. The French group, leader in military naval, already equips more than 50 navies around the world with its anti-aircraft defense, surface or anti-submarine warfare, maritime safety and security systems.

As for Poland, a neighboring country of Ukraine, it is continuing its rearmament at high speed. With the ambition of setting up the first army of the European Union. Already, since the invasion of Crimea in 2014, it has devoted more than 2% of its GDP to defense (which is the NATO standard). Last year, Warsaw announced that it was targeting 4% of GDP with a budget of almost 29 billion euros per year in the short term, compared to 20.5 billion in 2023 (and 12 billion in 2022). Which would make Poland the leading country in terms of NATO spending, according to several observers. France, for example, has dedicated 1.9% of its national wealth to defense in 2022.
