Paris: metro line 14 completely closes this Sunday for two weeks

If you are a regular user of line 14 of the Paris metro, you will need to find an alternative route for the next two weeks. The line closes completely, all day, from this Sunday October 22 until Sunday November 5. That is, almost throughout the All Saints' Day holidays, which start this Friday evening for French schoolchildren.

The cause ? The RATP explains that it must “test the new generation automatic piloting system on the existing line as well as on these extensions to the north and south”. The Paris transport authority specifies that “due to the duration of the tests, these tests cannot be carried out during long nights or weekends”.

Modernization work - already the cause of fifteen days of traffic interruption last August - in the form of a time trial. “The renewal of the automatic piloting system on the existing line is an essential step for the commissioning of the extensions in June 2024,” recalls RATP. The extended line to Orly airport (towards the south) and to Saint-Denis Pleyel (towards the north) must therefore open barely two months before the opening of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. “With the Olympic Games, the date commissioning cannot be postponed,” explains chief engineer Vincent Fontanel to AFP. Line 14 should be the backbone of transport during the 2024 Olympics. Once extended, this axis should transport a million passengers per day, becoming the busiest line of the Paris metro, ahead of line 1 and its 800,000 daily passengers.

For travelers temporarily orphaned from line 14, replacement buses will be put in place, but only to the south of the line, between Gare de Lyon and Olympiades. Otherwise, the RATP recommends that users switch to other existing lines, for example metro lines 6, 8, 12 and 13, the RER A or the bus lines.

The regulars of line 14 are not at the end of their troubles. In addition to closures at the end of service (from 10 p.m.) every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening, until December 28 (except December 25), the line will also be completely closed on November 18, 19 and 26 . New closures are also expected to take place in early 2024.
