On Spotify, Barbie is taking the airwaves by storm

"Life in plastic, it's fantastic!" ". In less than a week, this legendary lyric from Aqua's song "Barbie Girl" has taken on a whole new dimension. Since the release of the eponymous film on July 19, worn by American director Greta Gerwig, the famous plastic doll from Mattel has been breaking records. At the cinema first, the film, starring actors Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has already grossed nearly 155 million in US and Canadian cinemas this weekend, according to its distributor Warner Bros. In France, Barbie attracted 1.2 million viewers between Wednesday and Sunday, the third best start of the year behind Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire and Super Mario The Movie.

After the dark rooms, it is now in the ears of the whole world that Barbie is essential. On Spotify, “Barbie The Album” was the most streamed newly released album globally on the platform, from July 21-23, the platform claims in a statement.

Among the songs in the film, "I'm just Ken" sung by actor Ryan Gosling and "Man I Am" by British artist Sam Smith, both made it into the top 10 most listened to songs over the weekend last. According to Spotify, streams (listenings) of the song "Barbie World", featuring singers Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua, have increased by almost 100% worldwide.

On July 25, this song was the 6th most listened to on the platform globally, while Billie Eillish's title "What was I made for" was third. The song “Dance The Night” by British-Albanian artist Dua Lipa, who plays the Barbie Mermaid character in the film, is in eighth position in this daily top.

The enthusiasm is such that the users themselves create playlists around the film. In total, more than 620,000 playlists related to the Barbie movie have emerged on Spotify since the film's release. These include titles such as “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, “Barbie Tingz” by Nicki Minaj or even “California Gurls”, by Katy Perry and rapper Snoop Dogg, underlines the platform.

Faced with success, Spotify has also designed an official playlist on the theme "Barbie", with the entire soundtrack but also classics like "Girls just want to have fun" by Cindy Laupers or "Spice up your life" of the Spice Girls. In less than a week, the playlist has accumulated more than 400,000 likes and global streams have increased by almost 1560%. Proof, if one were needed, that the Barbie mania is essential for the summer.
