New problem for the Boeing 737Max, this time with the rudder control system

New quality control problem on Boeing 737 Max assembly lines. This time it was a loose or missing nut in the rudder control system. During a routine maintenance operation, a technician discovered a bolt with a missing nut on a mechanism of this equipment, which is used to control the symmetry of straight or turning flight. For its part, Boeing itself discovered a poorly tightened nut on a 737 Max, not yet delivered, during an inspection.

The information was passed on to the American Aviation Safety Agency (FAA). Boeing issued a warning message “urging” airline customers to “inspect the tie rods that control rudder movement for possible loose parts.” The FAA said it would closely monitor the inspections and take additional action based on further findings of this type.

For its part, United Airlines indicated that these inspections should not have an impact on its flight operations during this holiday season, during which American families travel from one end to the other of the country to find each other. The intervention time and therefore aircraft immobilization time is estimated at two hours.

The black streak therefore continues for Boeing. Not a month goes by without a new defect or quality control issue being detected. In mid-December, airlines were invited to check the condition of several components and parts of the nacelle, a critical part which integrates the thrust reverser and protects the engine, and replace them if necessary. More than 6,600 737 NG aircraft must be inspected by 2028. In mid-October, the manufacturer announced that it was expanding its inspections, launched in August, after the discovery of a new defect affecting the 737 Max-8, one of the four versions of the American medium haul. Some 75% of the 220 devices in stock at the end of the second half of the year are affected. Hundreds of poorly automatically drilled holes were discovered on the rear pressurization bulkhead, delivered by the American Spirit, one of the world leaders in aerostructures.
