Natural disasters: the price of insurance will increase in 2025

This is one of the consequences of global warming. The additional premium which finances the natural disaster regime of French insurers will be increased from January 1, 2025, in order to revive a system that has become deficit due to the increase in storms, droughts and floods. Decided by Bercy, published Thursday in the Official Journal, this increase concerns in particular homes and professional insurance, the surcharge for which will increase from 12% to 20%. On theft and fire contracts, it will increase from 6% to 9%.

This scheme, which costs on average around 25 euros per year per household, will increase to 41 euros. This will represent an additional windfall of 1.2 billion euros per year for insurers, for whom this increase will “restore balance” to the system, which has been in deficit since 2015. The public reinsurer CCR (Central Reinsurance Fund), responsible for compensating victims of natural disasters, sees this deficit reach “ at least 420 million euros per year by 2050”.

The increase in premiums had been requested by professionals for several months. By granting a 20% increase on the majority of contracts in 2025, Bercy is roughly aligned with the recommendations of France Assureurs and the CCR. This is “a good thing to perpetuate the regime”, rejoiced Antoine Quantin, director of reinsurance and public funds at the CCR. The “Cat Nat” regime remains a French exception which protects the French against natural risk.
