JO-2024: 3,000 additional Vélib', before the arrival of ephemeral stations

Vélib', the public self-service bicycle network in Paris and its inner suburbs, has 3,000 additional bicycles before the Olympic Games (July 26 - August 11), during which ten ephemeral stations will be installed near the sites, said Wednesday the Autolib' Vélib' Métropole union (SAVM). These 3,000 bicycles promised by the operator Smovengo “have arrived since the beginning of March,” declared Sylvain Raifaud, the president of the SAVM. With 20% more bicycles on the ground, the fleet in circulation reaches the mark of 20,000 units, or “the number of bicycles provided for in the contract”, underlines this elected EELV, according to whom the Parisian network is “the largest in the world ". The bicycle is increasingly presented as an alternative to the car and public transport during the Games, with 15 million visitors expected in Paris during this period.

Ten pop-up Vélib' stations, with a total capacity of 3,600 places, will be installed near the competition sites. “Today, 4% of all trips in the Paris region are made by bicycle and 1 in 4 bicycle trips are made with Vélib',” specifies the union. The ephemeral stations, tested in 2023 during the Solidays festival then during the Rugby World Cup, were therefore designed “to provide 1% of spectator transport”. But the 400,000 subscribers and 750,000 unique users in 2023 must still face numerous faulty bicycles, as well as regulation difficulties: when the stations in the center of Paris are full, preventing cyclists from parking, those located in periphery are sometimes empty.

To limit the problem of “saturation”, particularly in the center during the day, the SAVM wants to convince the town hall to install 1,700 additional terminals by 2025. Around 10% of this work, “a small nuisance for a big gain”, must be carried out before the Olympics, assures Mr. Raifaud. In 2018, the handover between the historic operator JCDecaux and Smovengo turned into a fiasco due to the replacement of stations to accommodate the new model.
