The government is indeed determined to regulate “shrinkflation”, this practice which consists of reducing the quantity of a product while maintaining its price, and which has increased in recent months with the return of inflation. A draft decree was sent to the European Commission on Wednesday to require large stores of more than 400 m2 to indicate the reduction in quantities and the increase in the price of these products, “on the packaging or on a label attached or placed nearby.
If the Brussels institution does not revise the text which must comply with European rules, the measure should apply by the end of March. Last September, Carrefour already took the lead by indicating to its customers some products affected by this “shrinkflation”. However, this general obligation seriously makes distributors cringe.
“It’s the industrialist who knows that his packaging has been reduced, that the recipe has been called into question,” lamented Dominique Schelcher, CEO of Système U, on France Inter. At the Federation of Commerce and Distribution (FCD) too, we insist on the responsibility of manufacturers.
