Driving license: France “not in favor” of the idea of a medical examination for elderly drivers

It's no. Questioned on Sud Radio this Thursday morning, the Minister for Transport opposed the idea of making maintaining a driving license conditional on a medical examination for the elderly. “We are not in favor of it”, because it would give the impression that some people may have an “expired” license, indicated Clément Beaune.

“I want to put an end to rumors or false news,” explained the government member. A “discussion” has indeed been launched by the European Commission, and it “could create this type of obligations”. But Paris will speak out against this idea: “When you are an elderly person, especially in rural areas [...], you need a car.” The executive therefore does not want an “age-related license”, which would require older people to pass a medical examination, under penalty of losing the right to drive their vehicle. “We are not changing this rule. [...] France does not ask for and does not support the idea that we impose a form of constraint or wall, of an expiry date, with an age for the driving license,” he insisted .

If Paris opposes this project, the European Union is currently considering changing the rules governing driving licenses. This discussion aims to limit risks, in order to meet the objectives of the “Vision Zero” plan: “Achieving virtually zero deaths and zero serious injuries on EU roads by 2050”. In this context, the text of the commission, recalled in a recent report by MEP Karima Delli, proposes that "Member States reduce the administrative validity periods to five years or less [...] for holders of licenses driving residing in their territory having reached the age of 70, in order to apply an increased frequency of medical checks or other specific measures, including refresher courses”. Leads rejected by the French government, therefore.
