Elon Musk dared what he refused just a year ago. “I have no pity for those who use the deaths of children,” he declared on X, formerly Twitter, when asked about the possible reinstatement of Alex Jones. This influential American conspiracy theorist was convicted of defamation for asserting that the tragedy of Sandy Hook in 2012, where 20 children were killed, was staged.
“The people have spoken and so it will be,” commented Elon Musk this time after publishing a poll in which he asked whether Alex Jones’ account should be reinstated. With almost two million votes, Internet users responded favorably by almost 70%.
Last year, Elon Musk similarly launched a poll on the return of former President Donald Trump to the platform. Internet users also approved and the Republican billionaire's account was reinstated in the following minutes.
Alex Jones was sentenced in 2022 to pay nearly a billion dollars after denying the 2012 killings. The families of the victims had launched legal proceedings against Alex Jones, explaining that they were being harassed by fans of the conspiracy theorist, firmly believing that the massacre had never taken place and that the grieving relatives played a role. Banned from Apple, YouTube and even Facebook, the conspirator was finally also excluded from Twitter in 2018. He has since publicly admitted the reality of the killing.
