The stainless health of French animation faces a labor shortage

French animation is doing well. We can realize this at the 47th edition of the International Animation Film Festival which is held in Annecy until Saturday. But also in the accounting balance sheets of the sector which appear apart in the world of tricolor cinema.

There are now 166 specialized companies in France, up 22% over ten years, which employed more than 9,000 employees in 2021, according to a study carried out by Audiens.

Ranked first in Europe and third worldwide in volume of animation series, French animation exports very well. The Franco-Canadian film Vaillante, released last fall, is the perfect example, since it exceeded 2 million admissions internationally, to which are added 1.2 million spectators in France, after UniFrance.

French animation alone represents a third of exports, ahead of fiction films (30.8%) and documentaries (19.8%) in 2021, according to the CNC. The sector is driven by the very strong demand for original content, purchased by foreign broadcasters, both for traditional television (193 series broadcast in 14 countries), and for video-on-demand platforms (174 programs broadcast in 52 countries ).

Due to this increased demand, the sector is in a situation of full employment and is struggling to recruit. Although the number of new graduates continues to grow, precariousness remains the rule in this market. More than 86% of the workforce is employed under fixed-term contracts (mainly fixed-term contracts), of which 76% are under 40, according to figures from Audiens. Long very masculine, the sector is opening up to women: between 2012 and 2021, the number of female technicians has increased by 139%, going from 1,300 to 3,100 employees.

Entertainment is also becoming less and less of a Parisian specialty. In 2011, 83% of the payroll was in the Paris region, compared to 75% in 2021. Charente sets the record for companies outside Île-de-France, with 20 studios and 1,185 employees in 2021. The department has experienced a 153% increase in the workforce in 10 years, accumulating 20 million euros in payroll.

To support the sector, the France Relance national program plans to put 54 billion euros on the table. This five-year plan aims to develop production capacities, improve training and meet environmental challenges.
