Oscars: five nominations for Anatomy of a Fall, The Passion of Dodin Bouffant eliminated

The Academy of Oscars revealed their nominations on Tuesday afternoon before the ceremony, which will be held on the night of Sunday March 10. The Palme d’Or did much better than expected. Justine Triet's legal drama was a hit with five nominations. In the expected categories: best film, actress for Sandra Hüller, best screenplay. And in categories that seemed less playable: best editing and best direction.

The French director is the only woman in the directing category, overtaking her American colleagues Greta Gerwig and Celine Song (Past Lives). A feat when you know to what extent this section is a “boys club”. The members of the Academy of Oscars seem not to have fallen under the spell of Barbie. In the running for the Oscar for best film, Greta Gerwig's comedy is absent from categories that seemed taken for granted. No nomination for Margot Robbie. Even if the CNC did not choose it to compete for the Oscar for best foreign film, Justine Triet's legal drama could be nominated in the general categories. The CNC's decision will be all the more criticized as The Passion of Dodin Bouffant was not selected in the best foreign film category. A hell of a snub.

With five nominations, Anatomy of a Fall becomes the most nominated French dialogue film in French cinema. Only The Artist did better but the film was silent! On March 10, the competition will be tough for Justine Triet who will face Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Martin Scorsese (Killers Of The Flower Moon) and Yorgos Lantimos (Poor Creatures). The most winnable category appears to be Best Screenplay.

As predicted, Oppenheimer once again leads the nominations with thirteen chances of statuettes, followed by Poor Creatures with eleven, Killers Of The Flower Moon ten and Barbie eight thanks to the reinforcement of the technical categories.

The portrait of the creator of the atomic bomb is present in all major categories: actor (Cilian Murphy), supporting roles (Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr), adaptation, direction. Cilian Murphy's most dangerous rival will undoubtedly be Paul Giamatti, loser teacher from Winter Break.

Among the women, Sandra Hüller will not have it easy. The German actress who maintains doubt in Anatomy of a Fall is caught between the two favorites: Emma Stone (nymphomaniac Frankenstein creature in Poor Creatures) and Lily Gladstone, the Native American revelation of Scorsese's great fresco.

Among the disappointed and forgotten are the trio of dangerous liaisons from May December (Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman, Charles Melton). British hopes around Saltburn and Without Knowing Us were swept away. Conversely, Bradley Cooper's biopic on the composer Leonard Bernstein Maestro and the actresses of the sports portrait Unsinkable are more successful than expected.
