Thriller by Andrea Di Stefano, 2h05

Cops don't sleep at night. Franco Amore is no exception to the rule. Even a few hours from retirement and after thirty-five years of good and loyal service. Amore is an honest, competent policeman. He never shot anyone. In a tunnel, his colleague Dino is found dead. Amore is called to this crime scene which he pretends to discover. Andrea Di Stefano goes back and expands time with great skill to reconstruct a diamond heist that goes wrong. If everything is not perfectly believable in the second part - we enter this tunnel like a mill - Last night in Milan portrays without complacency the reality of the job of a cop, paid a pittance without counting his hours, and sometimes brought to work in private security to make ends meet. For an informed ear, they are the only ones to speak a neutral Italian. The other protagonists have Calabrian or Sicilian accents – special mention to Antonio Gerardi in the role of Cosimo, worthy of Joe Pesci at Scorsese. In this basket of crabs, Pierfrancesco Favino plays a small fish. It gives him tremendous charisma and dignity. E.S.

Biopic by Virginie Verrier, 1h36

The staging has as much relief as the last match of the season for PSG (or OM, as desired). The football scenes compile the unimaginative goals, as the actress Garance Marillier touches her ball with her foot. But the fate of Marinette Pichon, Cosette in crampons (alcoholic and violent father) and pioneer of women's football, lends itself to an edifying biopic. Soccer star in the United States in the early 2000s, serial scorer for the France team, Pichon paved the way in a discipline still in need of recognition. E.S.

Romantic comedy by Jim Strouse, 1h44

She has just canceled her concerts until spring 2024 for health reasons. Failing to be in good enough shape to go on stage, Celine Dion is the heroine of a romantic comedy sewn with white thread but who also knows how to amuse the gallery with her second-degree mise en abyme. The singer of My Heart Will Go On plays herself and finds herself, despite herself, playing matchmaker between a jaded journalist and a bereaved illustrator. Mira lost her fiancé in a traffic accident. Inconsolable, she continues to send text messages to the deceased's mobile detailing his feelings. She does not know that the number has been reassigned to Rob, a music critic. Charmed by Mira's prose and encouraged by Céline Dion, whom he met in an interview, he got it into his head to meet the designer for real. The appeal of Jim Strouse's film is seeing Celine Dion poking fun at her reputation as a diva and queen of syrupy ballads. As the lovebirds who will triumph over all odds and misunderstandings, series fans will recognize Citadel and Outlander stars Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Sam Heughan. C.J.
