Italy competes for Oscars with migrant drama Io Capitano

The film received two awards at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month. The Italian National Association of Cinematographic Industries (ANICA) has selected Matteo Garrone's film Io Capitano (I Captain) to represent transalpine cinema in the race for the Oscar for best international film.

In this drama, the director of Gomorra recounts the moving and chilling epic of two young Senegalese cousins who decide to leave Dakar to try their luck in Europe. A perilous journey marked by grueling marches across the Sahara, torture in Libyan jails and Europe's indifference to their plight.

Screened in competition at the Venice Film Festival, Io Capitano walked away with the directing prize and the most promising actor trophy for his young actor, Seydou Sarr.

This film was chosen “for having embodied with great strength and cinematic mastery the universal desire to seek freedom and happiness,” explained ANICA. “We are very proud to be able to represent Italy,” reacted Matteo Garrone, who hopes that his film “will touch the hearts of the American public.” The filmmaker shot this film in 13 weeks between Senegal, Morocco and Italy with amateur actors.

To have a chance of winning the statuette next March, Io Capitano must now manage to find a place on the list of 15 films preselected at the beginning of January by the Oscar committee in charge of the best international film prize. Only five of these feature films will be nominated on January 23. Each year, nearly a hundred foreign films are sent to the American Cinema Academy.
