Four millions. This is the number of meals that volunteers from the UN World Food Program (WFP) will be able to distribute in Gaza thanks to The Weeknd's $2.5 million donation. “We thank Abel for this valuable contribution to the Palestinian people. We hope that others will follow Abel's example and support our efforts,” said Corinne Fleischer, WFP director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe region in a statement released Friday.
This donation of 2.5 million dollars (2.3 million euros) will make it possible to purchase 820 tonnes of food packages which will feed nearly 170,000 Gazans for two weeks. A donation which arrives “at a critical time”, specifies the organization, which “strives to feed more than a million Gazans on the verge of famine”. During the week-long truce in Gaza, WFP assisted more than 121,000 people, including in previously inaccessible areas of Gaza.
The Canadian singer with 103 million listeners per month on Spotify has been an ambassador for the UN's world food program since 2021. At the time, he had already donated 1.6 million euros of his personal fortune. In March 2022, he launched the XO Humanitarian Fund in partnership with the WFP and had raised nearly five million dollars in a few months. Half of this sum had been used to “support emergency food aid to women and children in Ethiopia” and the other half has just been used to support Gazan civilians.
