Gil Roman dismissed from his post as director of Béjart Ballet Lausanne

The press release came out on Friday noon: the Maurice-Béjart Foundation is terminating the contract of Gil Roman, the choreographer's favorite dancer, who had directed the Béjart Ballet Lausanne since his death in November 2007.

This announcement comes as the company was barely recovering from the turmoil that shook it in 2021, amid accusations of sexual harassment. After an audit, the Béjart Ballet of Lausanne announced a series of reforms to redress the situation. “Due to repeated sexually harassing behavior,” the production director was fired. Gil Roman, once implicated, had kept his position, supervised by a personnel director and a general director from basketball, Giancarlo Sergi.

Calm seemed to have returned until a misstep in January 2024 at the Opéra Garnier. Despite the measures taken in 2021, “Gil Roman invited this former production director to the performance, then to the private aperitif which followed in the presence of all the dancers”, relates the press release. “After clarifying the facts and also hearing Gil Roman, the foundation board considered this behavior inappropriate and intolerable towards the institution and even more so towards the dancers, taking into account the conclusions of the audit and the decisions he then made,” he further explains.

Gil Roman will therefore leave his position on April 30, 2024. It is up to the foundation to find a successor. In the meantime, thanks to the structure put in place in 2022 and led by Giancarlo Sergi, the production and presentation of the scheduled shows is ensured.

A dark personality, Gil Roman managed the rather shaky company for fourteen years: although he performed marvelously the ballets of the late master, he did not intend to remain in his shadow. He had improvised as a choreographer himself and conditioned each Béjart revival on the creation of a piece of his own. Alas, one cannot improvise as a choreographer. Just like having been a great dancer, you cannot improvise as a ballet master.
