Death at 36 of Guillaume Bats, the humorist with glass bones

He had made his strength from his illness, at least on stage. Comedian Guillaume Bats, born Guillaume Batreau, died at the age of 36, his production company announced on social networks overnight from Thursday to Friday. The 1.39 meter comedian was known for his shows in which he made fun of the brittle bone disease he had suffered from since birth.

“It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the death this Thursday, June 1, of Guillaume Bats, our great friend and brother at heart and on stage, shared Dark Smile Productions this morning on Facebook. The event being recent, we do not yet have all the details relating to his funeral, and do not yet know the cause of this tragic event.

Several actors reacted Friday to the announcement of the disappearance of their comrade. "We told you 'It's impossible. Finally look at yourself”. You made it. You made whole rooms laugh. Self-mockery and black humor so as not to cry. You have helped thousands of people to accept themselves. Goodbye Guillaume Bats,” greeted comedian Anne Roumanoff on Twitter. “It's never pleasant to lose someone funny, especially when it was an 8th dan of self-mockery. RIP in peace the G”, reacted comedian Pablo Mira on Instagram. “I will miss our disabled vs black valve battles. You were the king of self-mockery and 'We can laugh at anything and fuck you!'" tweeted actor and comedian Donel Jack'sman.

Abandoned by his mother before his first birthday, the future actor was a child of the DDASS. Object of mockery during his schooling - he was nicknamed Quasimodo -, Guillaume Bats had trained from childhood in the theater. With his first sketches designed in the 2000s, he stood out on the Internet for his corrosive humor, then was invited to television sets, notably in Laurent Ruquier's program "On ne demande qu'à en rire".

Produced by Jérémy Ferrari and Eric Antoine, Guillaume Bats has toured several times in France, notably performing at the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Festival Off d'Avignon. He was currently on tour for his new show Inchallah.

Brittle bone disease, or osteogenesis imperfecta - "what would it have been like if it had been perfect!" joked Guillaume Bats - is a rare genetic disease. It is characterized by great bone fragility, a source of deformities and multiple fractures, as well as significant growth disorders. “They say that God created man in his own image; I have a doubt”, had fun Guillaume Bats in his only on stage Hors cadre!, which he had presented in 2016 in Paris, at the Treviso theater.
