Dacia announced this Tuesday the signing of the Qatari driver Nasser Al-Attiyah, five-time winner of the Dakar, as an official driver of the Romanian brand (owned by the Renault Group) in the rally-raid category.

The 52-year-old driver, current champion and great dominator of the Dakar since the famous raid was held in Saudi Arabia, will officially race with Dacia from the test phases in 2024 and will then take to the tracks of the Dakar and the FIA ​​World Championship. Rally Raid (W2RC) starting in 2025.

Nasser Al-Attiyah and his co-pilot Mathieu Baumel will constitute the third crew of team Dacia for their rally-raid adventure and will share team with Frenchman Sébastien Loeb (co-piloted by Fabian Lurquin) and Spaniard Cristina Gutiérrez, who has as co-driver the also Spaniard Paul Brown.

Starting in 2024, the three teams will test a prototype of the brand, which will run on synthetic fuel, on the tracks of the Morocco Rally.

Nasser Al-Attiyah is a two-time world rally champion in the WRC-2 category and a 19-time Middle East rally champion between 2003 and 2015. He has participated in numerous rally, rally-raid and circuit competitions. In rally-raid he has no rival and has won the off-road rally World Cup five times and the Rally-Raid world championship twice.

In 2010 he finished the Dakar in second position, two minutes and 12 seconds behind Spaniard Carlos Sainz. In 2011 he won his first Dakar ahead of Giniel de Villiers and Carlos Sainz himself.

Nasser's next Dakar victories came in 2015, 2019, 2022 and 2023, in the company of his co-driver Mathieu Baumel, who will also be at his side with Dacia. Mathieu, 47, is one of the most successful French co-drivers, with four victories in the Dakar and 12 world champion titles (two in Rally-Raid, one in WRC2 and nine in MERC).
