Two comic book authors, the French Catherine Meurisse and the British Posy Simmonds, and one author, the American Daniel Clowes, are in the running for the Grand Prix of the city of Angoulême, the organizers announced on Thursday. The Grand Prix is the most prestigious award in the world of comics, and even more so since it is awarded following a vote in which only other authors take part.
For Catherine Meurisse, 43, being a finalist has become a habit: this is the fifth year in a row that she has reached the second round. Posy Simmonds, 78, and Daniel Clowes, 62, however, are not used to it.
The Grand Prize is awarded at the opening of the Angoulême International Comics Festival, this year on January 24. The ballot takes place in two rounds, with all comic book authors published at least once in French as voters. Details of the vote are not made public.
The Franco-Syrian Riad Sattouf, author of The Arab of the Future, won in 2023. He will be dedicated to the exhibition, The Arab of the Future, a world-work, which “brings the characters to life and on stage , the places (Brittany and Syria mainly), the customs, the times and the cultural differences between the West and the Mediterranean East which run through the six volumes of the series” specifies the press release of the event.
The 51st International Comics Festival (FIBD), takes place from January 25 to 28 and is part of the programming of the “Cultural Olympiad” label, mixing art and sport, linked to the organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
