Anatomy of a Fall and Oppenheimer's first Golden Globe winners

The 81st edition of the Golden Globes, the most prestigious Hollywood ceremony after the Oscars, began under excellent auspices for Oppenheimer and Anatomy of a Fall on Sunday evening in Los Angeles. The French Palme d'Or won the Golden Globe for best screenplay and best foreign language film in quick succession. This victory in the best screenplay category is impressive. Justine Triet beats the favourites: Killers Of The Flower Moon, Barbie and Oppenheimer.

“When we started writing this project with my life and work partner Arthur Harari, we were in the middle of a pandemic, stuck in our apartment and strangely, no one died,” joked the filmmaker. “We were rehearsing the text and we were like: okay we're having a lot of fun but it's way too radical and dark. No one is going to see this movie. It’s too long, they talk all the time, there’s not enough music, a couple fighting, a suicide, a dog vomiting’. But I wanted to make this film. I don't know exactly how things worked out but I'm so happy. I was able to do exactly what I love.”

A few minutes later, back on the podium, Justine Triet dedicated this second victory to her performers and her canine star. “This film is about the truth, the impossibility of grasping it, a child's obsession with determining it. Milo, thank you for giving us so much more than your 13 years. Sandra Hüller, thank you so much for never trying to make this character perfect and thank you for creating a complex woman who never apologizes for speaking her mind. Antoine Reinartz, thank you for being the baddest prosecutor of the year. And Swann Arlaud, the sexiest lawyer in the French Alps. And Snoop, thank you for being yourself. Just a dog,” she listed, facetiously referring to the sex symbol status acquired by Swann Arlaud.

The trial film about a writer, accused of having pushed her husband into the void, is still in the running for the prize for best drama and best actress. At the microphone of Canal, Justine Triet said she was a little overwhelmed “by this crazy moment”. The director, who has exhausted all the speeches she had prepared, hopes that her actress Sandra Hüller will also be able to get on the podium even if the experts' favorite remains Lily Gladstone, Native American revelation from Killers Of The Flower Moon.

Oppenheimer, portrait of the creator of the atomic bomb, leads the number of statuettes collected: best director for Christopher Nolan, best actor for Irishman Cillian Murphy and best supporting actor Robert Downey Jr.

The other box office heavyweight Barbie is content for the moment with the prize for best blockbuster. The journalists who are members of the Golden Globes preferred to award the statuette for best actress to Emma Stone discovering life in Poor Creatures rather than to Margot Robbie, incarnation of the famous Mattel doll.

Martine Scorsese's great fresco Killers Of The Flower Moon is currently completely absent from the charts.

On the small screen side, the Golden Globes lined up en masse behind three series, the dive into the kitchen of The Bear in the comedy sections, the epilogue of the family saga Succession and the miniseries Acharnés.
