This is clear from the definitive data published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This data improves the Government's forecasts, which indicated an increase of 2.4% for 2023; However, GDP continued on the path of deceleration last year after having grown by 5.8% in 2022 and 6.4% in 2021.

Despite this, the Minister of Economy, Carlos Body, has highlighted that the 2023 economic growth of 2.5% is more than five times higher than the euro zone average and the highest among the main European economies. "The figures are incontestable," said Corps.

The INE has also maintained the growth pattern, with a contribution from national demand (consumption and investment) of 1.7 percentage points and a contribution from external demand (exports and imports) of 0.8 points.

Annual growth has been supported by the strength of household consumption driven by job creation and the good performance of the foreign sector, in a context in which interest rates are at their highest level in the last two decades. .

Business investment, however, has shown greater weakness and has not yet recovered its pre-pandemic level.

The value of GDP at current prices for the whole of 2023 stood at 1,461,889 million euros, 8.6% higher than in 2022.

GDP increased 0.6% in the fourth quarter compared to the previous quarter. This rate was two tenths higher than that of the third quarter.

National demand contributed 0.4 points to quarter-on-quarter GDP growth. For its part, external demand contributed 0.1 points.

On the demand side, household consumption grew by 0.2% and that of Public Administrations by 1.0%. For its part, investment, gross capital formation, rose 0.6%.

Both exports of goods and services (2.7%) and imports (2.5%) registered positive rates.

On the supply side, all major sectors presented positive rates in their added value. Thus, the industry grew 2.3% quarter-on-quarter. Within this, manufacturing accelerated three tenths, up to 1.1%.

Construction increased 1.2% quarter-on-quarter, 1.9 points more than the previous quarter. And services slowed down nine tenths, to 0.1%. For its part, agriculture registered a quarter-on-quarter variation of 5.3%, compared to -4.2% in the previous quarter.
