The 230 members of the Synodal Assembly, the central body of the Synodal Way reform process, were entitled to vote. The process was started at the end of 2019 and is now to be brought to a conclusion for the time being. Reforms are being sought in four areas: the position of women, dealing with power, Catholic sexual morality and compulsory celibacy for priests.
The reform process sees itself as a reaction to the abuse scandal in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis and the Roman Curia - the central administration in the Vatican - have taken a clear stand against the planned reforms.
