Hamas-Israel war: who is Israa Jaabis, the most famous Palestinian prisoner, released Saturday evening?

His face was seen around the world. Israa Jaabis, 37, is probably the best-known Palestinian prisoner among the second group of prisoners released on Saturday, November 25, in exchange for Israeli and Thai hostages. The face of this ex-inmate, partly burned, has been widely used as a symbol of the suffering of Palestinian prisoners.

Israa Jaabis was 31 when she was sentenced to 11 years in prison for detonating a gas canister she was carrying in the trunk of her car at a checkpoint in 2015, injuring a police officer. According to Israeli authorities, she was heading towards Israel “where she intended to carry out a suicide attack,” recalls the Times of Israel.

Pro-Palestinian media, such as Wafa - Palestine News Agency, put forward the version according to which Israeli soldiers opened fire on his vehicle, which led to the explosion of the gas cylinder in his car. The fire would then have burned 60% of his body, causing the loss of his eight fingers and distortions to his face and back.

His photo in an Israeli court, raising his withered fingers, his face partly burned, is regularly brandished in demonstrations to illustrate the suffering of Palestinian prisoners.

The NGO Addameer, which provided her with a lawyer, reports that she was burned on 50% of her body. According to the Palestinian authorities, she now needs six surgeries.

After her release on Saturday evening, the Palestinian spoke to journalists: “I am ashamed to speak of rejoicing when all of Palestine is hurt,” she said in the family living room of her home, located in the district of Jabal Moukkaber, alongside his son Moatassem, 13 years old. “They must release everyone,” she pleaded.

Alongside Israa Jaabis, 38 other prisoners were released by Israel, in exchange for 13 Israeli hostages and 4 Thai hostages. This operation was the second after a first release on Friday. Among the released Palestinian prisoners were only women and young people under the age of 18. A new exchange of hostages and prisoners should take place this Sunday, during the third day of truce in the conflict.
