'Dad, You're My Hero' - Russian Girl Writes Heartbreaking Letter to Convicted Dad

After the conviction of her single father for criticizing the Russian offensive in Ukraine, a 13-year-old girl in Russia wrote her father a heartbreaking letter: "Dad, you are my hero," read the letter published on Wednesday by her father Father separated Maria. "I love you very much, you are innocent, I will always be by your side."

The authenticity of Maria's letter to her father was confirmed to the AFP news agency by the family's lawyer. After the separation from her father, the 13-year-old was taken to a home and was forbidden any contact with her father.

Maria's father, Alexei Moskalyov, was sentenced to two years in prison in the small town of Yefremov on Tuesday for criticizing the Russian offensive in Ukraine, after he had been provisionally stripped of custody because of a corresponding drawing by his daughter. However, the verdict was read out on Tuesday in the absence of the defendant because, according to the court, he had escaped from house arrest.

The case has been stirring tempers in Yefremov, 300 kilometers south of Moscow, and beyond for some time. The trigger was a drawing Maria made at school showing rockets aimed at a woman and a child with a Ukrainian flag. The principal immediately called the police. Officials checked the father's Internet accounts and discovered comments criticizing the offensive.

The actions of the authorities in Yefremov shocked people across Russia. Opposition media reports that an online petition is calling for Maria to be allowed to return to her father. Where the father and daughter were on Wednesday remained unclear. The family lawyer said he was unable to meet Maria.

Since the start of the Russian offensive in Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Russia has introduced a series of criminal sanctions to deal with criticism of the military. Prominent opposition figures and ordinary citizens have been arrested, and some have already been tried and convicted.
