"Back to school with a one-off effect" - The current corona numbers explained for you

33,930 corona cases were reported to the RKI yesterday.

In the previous week comparison, there is a minus of nine percent.

This is the 32nd consecutive business day of a week-on-week decline.

The downward trend in the number of cases is still intact.

The 7-day moving average of new cases drops to 30,051 today - the lowest level since June 7.

At that time, immediately after Pentecost, the previous low for the year was reached at 27,481.

The 7-day incidence continues to fall, from 237 to 234.

In six of the 16 federal states, however, it is rising slightly. And in Hamburg, from where no numbers had been reported the day before, the incidence increased significantly in the course of obvious late reports, from 102 to 159.

Various federal states, including Schleswig-Holstein and especially Berlin, experienced an increase in incidence around the beginning of the school year.

It was initially unclear whether this was only due to a reduction in underreporting due to increased testing or also to a real revival of the infection process.

It now looks as if the increased number of tests only led to a one-off effect: the incidence increases for a short time, only to then drop significantly again.

Striking: The five federal states with the strongest decrease in incidence compared to the previous week (marked red) are all at least in the second week of school.

On the other hand, the countries that are still on vacation or have just come out:

In most of them (see pink marking) the decline in incidence is weaker than average.

The bottom line is that the return to schools and jobs after the end of the holidays may in itself drive the number of infections.

But even if that is the case, this is currently being overshadowed by the general downward trend in the infection process.

148 corona deaths were reported to the RKI yesterday.

That's 58 more than a week ago.

In total, we are at 538 deceased in the current week.

Every day we hear the new Corona case numbers. But what do they mean, where are we in the pandemic and what is the trend? Olaf Gersemann explains and evaluates the current figures briefly and concisely - every morning anew.
