'No woman should be forced to cover her head', Brazilian footballers in support of women of Iran

The Brazilian football team arrived in Australia on Wednesday, where they will participate in the Women's World Cup, on a plane bearing a message of support for the women of Iran who have regularly protested against the wearing of the veil since the death in custody by Mahsa Amini in 2022.

The plane landed on the tarmac at Brisbane airport with the inscription on its cabin in capital letters “NO WOMAN SHOULD BE FORCED TO COVER HER HEAD”. Portraits of Mahsa Amini and footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani, sentenced to 26 years in prison for his participation in the protests, also adorned the tail of the device.

This show of support comes a few days after the announcement by Fifa that eight armbands defending various feminist causes, including gender equality or the end of violence against women, could be worn by players during the World Cup co-organized by Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20.

The Brazilians, eighth finalists in the previous edition, will start their World Cup against Panama on July 24 in Adelaide, in group F also including France and Jamaica.

The death on September 16, 2022 of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd arrested for violating the very strict dress code imposed on women in Iran, provoked a wave of protests, mostly women, repressed in blood and which led to the death of hundreds of people in Iran.
