Moto GP: after Formula 1, Liberty Media is preparing to buy MotoGP

Already owner of Formula 1, the American group Liberty Media is in the process of buying the company owning the rights to the MotoGP world championship, Dorna Sports, for more than 4 billion euros, assures the Financial Times.

Dorna Sports, which is based in Madrid and notably owns, in addition to the rights to the MotoGP championship, those to the Superbike championship, is today controlled 40% by the Bridgepoint fund and 39% by the Investment Fund of the Canadian pension plan, recalls the British daily. The rest of the capital is in the hands of the directors of Dorna.

The deal with Liberty Media values Dorna at more than 4 billion euros, including debt, according to the newspaper. Still according to the FT, which relies on sources close to the matter, QSI, the sovereign wealth fund of Qatar which owns Paris Saint-Germain and the TKO Group holding company, bringing together the American professional wrestling league (WWE) and the arts league mixed martial arts (MMA), have also been in discussions for the buyout of Dorna with its owners.

This acquisition, which would give the Liberty Media group control of Formula 1 and the MotoGP championship, could however be closely scrutinized by competition control authorities. The CVC fund, once the owner of the same two championships, was for example forced by the European competition watchdog to sell the motorcycle championship in 2006 when it acquired F1, of which it ceded control to Liberty Media in 2017, again reminds the Financial Times.

Contacted by AFP, the parties could not be reached or did not wish to comment on this matter.
