Formula 1: the FIA clears its president of any interference in the organization of the Las Vegas Grand Prix

The Ethics Committee of the International Automobile Federation has exonerated the president of the organization, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, of any interference in the organization of the Las Vegas Grand Prix last year, said a press release from the FIA Wednesday. “The independent committee has determined that the accusations against the president of the FIA are unfounded,” said this press release, adding that this committee had received the assistance of external advisers for its investigations.

Media outlets, including the BBC, claimed in early March that Mohammed Ben Sulayem would have asked his teams to find a way not to approve the Las Vegas circuit, which was hosting its first Formula 1 Grand Prix in 2023. According to the BBC, which cited an internal FIA report, the Emirati official reportedly asked in particular to “find solutions to prevent the FIA from certifying the circuit before the race weekend” in November 2023.

“After reviewing the results of the investigations, the ethics committee unanimously concluded that there was no evidence to corroborate the accusations of interference in any form concerning President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.” The press release specifies that the investigation lasted 30 days and allowed the questioning of 11 witnesses.

The reason why the president of the FIA would have wanted to prevent this race from taking place had not been explained. A conflict of influence and image, however, undermines relations between the FIA, the supreme body of motorsport, and the American group Liberty Media, which holds the commercial rights to F1 and organizes the Las Vegas GP. The ethics committee also cleared Mr Ben Sulayem in another case regarding the result of last year's Saudi GP.

Still according to the BBC, the president of the FIA asked officials to cancel a penalty imposed on driver Fernando Alonso during this race. But “the president was exonerated of any wrongdoing” in the context of this other affair, adds the FIA press release.
