Searches are underway at the headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) in Las Rozas, a suburb of Madrid, in an investigation into alleged corruption, judicial sources told AFP on Wednesday. These operations carried out by the Civil Guard are part, according to the Spanish press, of an investigation into irregularities in the contracts which allowed the organization of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia, signed then by Luis Rubiales, the former president of the RFEF.
The Saudi kingdom has hosted the semi-finals and final of the Spanish Super Cup since 2020, for some 40 million euros per year, after an agreement in which the Kosmos company of former FC Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué served of intermediary.
According to several media, other operations took place simultaneously elsewhere on Spanish territory, notably at the home of Luis Rubiales, former president of the RFEF now suspended for having forcibly kissed world champion Jenni Hermoso. But the latter was not present.
The intervention in the premises of the Spanish Federation is part of an investigation into “alleged criminal acts of corruption and money laundering”, judicial sources told AFP. According to these sources, the operation should result in seven arrests and the indictment of five other people.
The searches took place in the middle of a gathering of the Spanish national team, which is currently training for its two friendly matches against Colombia on Friday and Brazil on Tuesday.
