Colombian cyclist Nairo Quintana, returning to the Movistar team after a blank year following his disqualification at the end of the Tour de France in 2022, announced Thursday that he will race the Vuelta and the Giro in 2024 .

“The Giro is a race in which I have participated very few times, but I liked it a lot, and the Vuelta, we know it,” said Quintana during the presentation of the Spanish team for next season . The 33-year-old Colombian won the Tour of Italy in 2014 for the first of his two participations and he won the Tour of Spain in 2016 during his fourth attempt.

“Nairo will be the leader of the team, with Einer (Rubio) at the Giro” and “with Enric (Mas) at the Vuelta,” said team director Eusebio Unzué. Recognizing that “it is a great responsibility to do very well”, Quintana, who left Movistar in 2019 for the French team Arkéa-Samsic, before returning there last October, said he was “enormously grateful, enthusiastic and happy to approach this new season with training “which has helped me a lot during this decade and which I carry in my heart”.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced the disqualification of the Colombian from the 2022 Tour de France, in which he finished sixth, for two positive tests for Tramadol, a painkiller banned by medical regulations since 2019.

After his appeal was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the pocket climber (1.67 m, 58 kg) terminated his contract with Arkéa-Samsic.
