Bundestag approves funding for 49-euro ticket

On Thursday, the Bundestag passed the law introducing the Deutschlandticket. The traffic light groups voted for the template. Union and AfD voted no, the left faction abstained. The law is primarily about the financing of the ticket, with which public transport throughout Germany can be used from May for 49 euros a month.

The federal government will contribute 1.5 billion euros to the financing of the ticket in the years 2023 to 2025. The so-called regionalization funds, which the federal government pays to the states for local public transport, will be increased accordingly. In the current year, the federal government will also assume half of the costs arising from the introduction of the ticket. The financing of the Deutschlandticket beyond 2025 will later be regulated by law.

At the beginning of March, the Federal Council passed several amendments to the draft law. However, these were largely rejected by the federal government. The draft that has now been passed by the Bundestag is expected to be voted on in the chamber of the federal states on March 31st.
