Tesla launches project for its future battery factory in Shanghai

Tesla officially launched this Friday its project for a future giant battery factory in Shanghai, the second of the American electric vehicle giant in the Chinese economic capital, state media reported. Representatives of the company signed an agreement on Friday to acquire land on the outskirts of Shanghai, according to the New China news agency.

This new factory, which was announced by Tesla in April, will have a production capacity of 10,000 “megapack” batteries per year. Its construction should start at the beginning of 2024 and the site should become operational at the end of the year, again according to Chine Nouvelle. Tesla's megapack batteries, intended to store energy and stabilize the supply of electricity networks, claim to be able to store more than 3 megawatt hours each.

Tesla opened its first “gigafactory” in Shanghai in 2019, a gigantic assembly plant for its electric vehicles. The group's fanciful boss, billionaire Elon Musk, made a several-day visit to China last spring, the first to the country in more than three years, due to the pandemic. Welcomed almost like a head of state, Elon Musk spoke with various Chinese ministers and visited the Tesla gigafactory in Shanghai during this stay.

However, its good relations with Beijing have also earned it criticism, including from Washington. Last month, American President Joe Biden, not a fan of Elon Musk, considered that the latter's multiple cooperations with foreign countries deserved to be “examined” more closely.
