Olympic Games 2024: the establishment responsible for manufacturing Olympic medals victim of a strike

Will the world's athletes be able to proudly wear a medal around their necks this July? Some of the employees of Monnaie de Paris, notably responsible for their manufacturing for the 2024 Olympic Games, have been on strike for several days for better salary conditions. “Generally speaking, production continues on the medals and we are completely within our production schedule,” however wanted to reassure a source from the Monnaie de Paris.

According to David Faillenet of the UGICT-CGT, one of the two unions at the origin of the social movement with the CGT Paris, around fifty employees were on strike, out of around 430. A figure close to that of management, which mentions a rate of strikers of 11%. This strike movement, which began on Tuesday and whose renewal must be voted on Thursday during a general assembly, takes place within the framework of the obligatory annual negotiations (NAO) on salaries.

The management proposal, signed by three unions out of five, but which only represent 48% of the staff, provides for salary increases of 4.5% for employees earning less than 28,000 euros per year, then a decreasing percentage which falls at 1.5% for those earning between 42,000 and 48,000 euros.

“When you have 50 euros net more per month, that doesn't mean you're getting by,” criticized an elected official from the CGT Paris when interviewed, citing the level of Parisian rents and the persistent inflation on energy and food. The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11 and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8.
