Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens) has called for an end to the so-called pushbacks of refugees on the Polish-Belarusian border. "People are sent back without their individual cases being examined or without medical care being available," said the Vice President of the Bundestag to the "RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland".
That is not compatible with European law. “Moreover, those who have been rejected have no assurance that they would be safe in Belarus. On the contrary.” It is “obviously a matter of pushbacks that are banned in Europe”.
Göring-Eckardt went on to say: "European law must apply, be defended and protected at our European external borders." The rule of law must apply to all people. "It takes humanity and order," emphasized the Green politician. "That means orderly registrations, humanitarian aid on site and, as a senior border guard official told me, legal ways of migrating." The refugees are entitled to fair procedures. This also includes fair distribution in Europe.
The Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko began bringing refugees to the border last year in order to put pressure on the EU. According to Göring-Eckardt, the situation there has not changed significantly since then.
