Federal prosecutor arrests alleged IS fighters

Officials from the Federal Criminal Police Office arrested a suspected IS fighter in Essen. As the federal prosecutor announced on Wednesday in Karlsruhe, the Syrian is strongly suspected of being a member of a terrorist organization abroad.

The man is said to have joined the Islamic State (IS) in Syria at the end of 2013. He belonged to an IS combat unit that kidnapped and executed opposing fighters and other undesirables.

The investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice has now ordered the man who was arrested on Monday to be remanded in custody.
