The Kremlin has turned the gas supplies into a finely calibrated weapon in the system competition. It maintains dependence on Russian natural gas (and western payments) while at the same time exerting pressure on the macroeconomic and consequently political situation in Europe via a targeted inflation push.

That ties political attention. However, this adjustment pain that accompanies the reconfiguration of the energy market eclipses the nuclear saber-rattling with which President Putin regularly seeks to split the Western alliance.
