Free ferries for pedestrians and cyclists should boost tourism on the Danish islands over the summer.
But the possibility of free færgerejser has also created long queues across the country and has developed into a bit of a headache for the local islanders, writes TV2 East.
for Example, the ferry to Orø Thursday had to leave 50 people on the mainland, because it was filled up by the tourists.
The free ferries is a part of the so-called summer package, which was signed in June by the government and a broad majority in the Danish Parliament.
in addition to making the 53 ferry free for pedestrians and cyclists in July, so will be færgeturene also cheaper for all of august and september.
But the free ferries have not only brought joy on the islands.
For when the ferries fill up quickly by tourists, there is no place for the islanders when they should back and forth from the mainland.
I can't schedule when I go home. I can for example, do not plan purchase, because I don't know if I can catch a ferry home, says Rune Bigum, who lives on the Bible and works in Holbæk, for TV2 East.
- It is first come, first served basis, and it is not sustainable for us long-term views on the Bible.
According to TV2 East comes to the problem in several places in the country.
the President of the small Islands ferry companies, Lars Wolfgang Hansen, informs to the media, that there are several places experienced 'bottlenecks'.
30. June had the crossing to the Island in the Limfjord, for example 54 passengers. 1. July, where the free passage came into force, there were 386 passengers with.
It has been up to the ferry companies themselves whether they will offer free travel. If they participate, they get subsequently the lack of ticket earnings covered by the state.
