While the technologies used to automatically change depend on the preferences of the driver, such as the Smart mode Drive – available on most of the current models of Hyundai and Kia – ICT Connected Shift System is the first ICT to automatically change the gear according to the road and traffic conditions.
The system uses an intelligent software in the transmission control unit (TCU), which collects and interprets the input in real-time to pass them on to the on-board equipment such as navigation system with 3D and the system of cameras and radar for the automatic control of the speed. The navigation system 3D includes the detection of altitude, slope, curvature, and updates of traffic conditions, while the radar constantly monitors the vehicles prior to and the free spaces of the lane.
by Using all these inputs, the TCU provides the scenario of displacement is optimal for the driving situations in real-time through an artificial intelligence algorithm, and thus acts on the actuator of the transmission to optimize driving conditions. For example, when you expect a slowdown relatively long, the radar does not detect the irregularity of the speed of the car before the car, the clutch engages and the transmission goes temporarily insane mode (N) to improve the efficiency of fuel consumption.
When Hyundai and Kia have tested a vehicle with ICT system Connected Shift on a road full of curves, the rate of change was reduced by about 43% compared to vehicles without this system. Therefore, the system has also reduced the need to resort to the use of the brake, about 11%, by increasing the efficiency in wear and tear of the car and the driver fatigue driving.
Always during the tests are tested various conditions of use of the system, as in the case of the need of power for acceleration for entering highway. In this specific condition, the driving mode is shifted automatically to Sport mode so as to align the running order of the car in the test to the flow of traffic, then the vehicle is returned automatically to the driving mode of the original, with a preference for energy efficiency and safety.
Always in virtue of efficiency and comfort, also the intervention of the engine brake has been automatically set to activate upon release of the accelerator pedal, whereas, of course, the presence of bumps, slopes, descents, and any changes in speed limit. The system is also in line with the technology driving autonomous, a reality in constant development day by day.
Hyundai and Kia are planning to further develop the ICT system Connected Shift, to reach a level of transmission technology even more advanced based on communication LTE or 5G, capable of detecting traffic signs, to understand and interpret the habits and the behaviour of drivers, in order to refine even more the response of the exchange during the running of the car.
