This is where Putin's confused propaganda collides with reality

Vladimir Putin's speech on the "annexation" of four occupied territories in Ukraine was one of the craziest the Kremlin ruler has ever made. It had little to do with Ukraine, in fact it was hate speech and a declaration of war against the West. Above all, she was a prime example of psychological projection.

After all, Putin accused the West of everything that Russia has been doing for more than 100 years and is now trying again in Ukraine: colonialism, the fight against free societies, genocide and the will to weaken and destroy other nations. This is no longer a case for political analysis, but for a psychiatrist, said some observers.

The "annexations" of Moscow are pure fiction. They violate international law, violate the UN Charter and are not recognized by anyone. In addition, Russia does not completely control the claimed areas.

The fact that at the same time the Ukrainians almost completely closed the encirclement around the Russian-held transport hub Lyman and also reached the outskirts of the city on Saturday shows how far the dream and reality differ.

Lyman is in Donetsk Oblast, which Russia “annexed” on Friday. Several thousand Russian soldiers in the city are cut off from supplies and escape routes and either have to give up voluntarily or they are crushed.

Ukrainian units are advancing there, but also further north, deeper and deeper behind the new Russian defense line on the Oskil River, which Moscow was trying to build up after the debacle in Kharkiv. There are already signs of the next collapse of the Russian front.

The line of defense in the Donbass is also becoming increasingly endangered as a result. The newly recruited cannon fodder that Moscow is throwing at the front with no training will do little to change that.

None of this stopped Putin's propaganda artists from staging a dazzling annexation ceremony in Moscow that was reminiscent of Nazi party rallies – including eternal allegiance. In fact, Putin's empire is hollowed out from within and his military is devastated. The land grab is just an attempt to politically simulate what in the real world can no longer be achieved militarily.
