Searched phone book has brought the police forward

A more than 30-year-old phone book helped the investigators in the case of the so-called Göhrde murders. It surfaced this summer after a police call. Police spokeswoman Julia Graefe said in Lüneburg that the telephone book from 1989 had led to investigations. However, she declined to provide any further information due to the ongoing investigation.

In July, the police asked the population for help because they were following a lead in the criminal case that had not previously been pursued. They wanted to compare certain telephone numbers from that time with the 040 area code. Only: So far, the officials had no corresponding phone book available. The "Göhrde murders" refer to the violent death of two couples in the community of Göhrde in the Lower Saxony district of Lüchow-Dannenberg in the summer of 1989. The main suspect, a cemetery gardener, committed suicide in 1993 while in custody. The police are investigating evidence of a suspected accomplice. The "Cold Case" department of the Lüneburg police has been investigating the case since 2017.
