Brexit, the british ambassador to the italians: we Want you to stay
“We want you to stay”, “we want you to stay,” says Jill Morris when there are only a few hours to the final separation between the United Kingdom and the european Union, after three years of internal crises and negotiations, expectations, and steps back. Tomorrow at midnight the curtain will fall, bye bye Uk. “With the Brexit, the government realizes the promise made to the british people, through its Parliament takes control on some of the fundamental choices”, claims the ambassador who has called journalists in his roman residence, villa Wolkonsky, in order to spread optimism about the melancholy of the divorce: “we Leave the european Union, not Europe. We are ambitious for the future. Our goals are to build a new partnership with the Eu, to be in the front line in the promotion of free trade, to defend the values of democracy and human rights, protect the environment". It is not a last farewell, in short. “I'm optimistic we can and must take advantage of the opportunities that this transition offers to us. We will continue to be friends and partners of Europe”.

The ambassador speaks of the “special relationship” with Italy, puts in a row the challenges on which Rome and London are “working together” - the safety, the environment, the organisation of the next un climate summit in Cop26. “The last few years have not ceased to be incredibly productive and prolific for our bilateral relationship,” says Morris, who arrived in Rome a few months after the referendum to be held in 2016. Trade between the two Countries have grown by 3.4% in 2018, 44,5 billion euros in goods and services travelling on the axis Rome-London. The United Kingdom is the first european destination for foreign direct investment, Italy was the second european Country to invest in the Kingdom.

But the thought goes especially to the 700 thousand italians who live in Great Britain, to the thousands who would like to live in, to the many in London have found success and have built good luck: will he still be so? Morris assures, “we want you to stay”, he repeats, and the rest of the italians are "the most numerous community, academic and scientific european" in the Country; the british universities there are 16 thousand students, and the number grows every year: a river of talent that has contributed to make the Great Britain and that the british did not want to give up. But now what will happen? For those already living in the Country, and for those of you who will arrive by the end of the transition period, i.e. by 2020, nothing will change. "Their rights will be guaranteed". Then, yes, things will change. The government is developing a new plan for immigration inspired by the australian model, “points based System”, the details will be made known by the premier Boris Johnson , but the spirit seems already clear: England will welcome immigration is functional to the economy, skilled migrants and talents, which will be given of the scores, probably on the basis of education, language skills, work experience, as happens in Australia. For all others it will be more complicated.
