Tennis: player involved in betting suspended until... 2039

Spaniard Aaron Cortes has been suspended for 15 years due to his involvement in match-fixing, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced.

Cortes, who reached a career-high world ranking of 955 in 2017, admitted to 35 violations of tennis' anti-corruption program between 2016 and 2018 and cooperated fully with the investigation.

In a statement cited by Reuters, ITIA said Cortes' accusations included "manipulating the outcome of events, accepting money to manipulate the outcome of events, failing to report corrupt approaches, betting about tennis and providing money to tournament officials in exchange for a wild card.”

“The player was fined $75,000, of which $56,250 was suspended,” the court added. “The player's suspension period began on March 27, 2024 and ends at midnight on March 26, 2039.”
